Located in the mountains about an hour and a half away from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Camp Buck Toms is a gem. It is owned and operated by the Great Smoky Mountain Council. With its heavily wooded mature forest, thriving wildlife, lake, great program facilities and a mature staff this is the place to spend summer camp with your unit!
The facilities at Camp Buck Toms are second to none. Whether it’s swimming in our private cove branching off of Watts Bar Lake, hiking the trails and viewing the Indian mounds of the tribes that once inhabited the lands, talking to someone halfway around the world in our Ham Radio classroom, or having dinner in our wonderful Dining Hall, we guarantee that our amenities go hand in hand with our world class program. We have fantastic shooting sports ranges, a mountain bike program, a wilderness COPE course with over a dozen complex elements, a fishing pier complete with fish attractors, and a climbing tower over sixty feet tall!
Camp Buck Toms also provides the best in health and safety. Our Health Lodge is staffed by a certified EMT and every week the University of Tennessee loans a university doctor to help tend to any injuries and illnesses that may be encountered during the camping experience. In case of a severe emergency, we also have a direct satellite link up to the University of Tennessee Hospital.
We also have the beautiful Jane Manly Museumdedicated to the preservation of the history of the Great Smoky Mountain Council. Here, we have on display thousands of patches, shirts, books, and much more documenting the Great Smoky Mountain Council’s path through history since it’s inception!
Throughout the years, we have continued to strive to fulfill our obligation of offering an excellent summer camp program for Scouts. We look forward to providing your Troop the program and service they deserve and for which Camp Buck Toms is known. Whether your Scouts are new to your Troop or experienced Eagle Scouts, we offer a program for all, including a first year camper program, a traditional merit badge program, and a complete high adventure program for older Scouts and Venturers!
We have made many improvements to our facilities and our programs in the past five years! 2011 saw the addition of a brand new, state of the art five stand shotgun range, as well as renovations to the dining hall. It also saw the renovation of campsites 3 and 10, moving from canvas tents to the more permanent 3-sided Adirondacks. In 2012, campers were welcomed to a brand new Buck Toms, with the campsite renovations having taken place in all sixteen campsites. In 2013 we added an all new high COPE course, updated the zipline, and added a V Swing! Our STEM program was expanded. Campsite improvements included new fire pits. The waterfront docks were repaired. Dining Hall operations were improved. In 2014 we moved the camp office operations to a building across the parking lot to make it more efficient. The health lodge was moved to the old camp office building. Another building was renovated to make it the camp bike shop for our expanding mountain bike program. A new ski boat was added to our aquatics program. 2015 saw more improvements to your camp! We have added shelters (with electricity!) to all campsites, renovations were made to the campfire ring area, and a new walkway was added to our office entrance! A 16' BassTracker boat was donated to the camp and Scoutmasters were able to reserve it for their use while in camp! 2016 saw the complete renovation of our Training Center! Our Trading Post was also remodeled.
Summer camp is designed to be the highlight of your Troop’s camping year. Our dedicated staff will do everything in its power to make sure your stay at Buck Toms creates memories that will last a lifetime. Let’s get to work and make Camp Buck Toms 2017 one for all to remember!
